A First-Time Buyer’s Guide to Pre-Owned Luxury

The Luxury Club Team

Buying pre-owned is how many people get the piece they want: a discontinued colour, a model that is no longer made, or a vintage reference that only exists second-hand. It is also a market where a little knowledge protects you. These are the things worth checking before you buy anything.

First, who is inspecting the piece? Authentication cannot be done reliably from photographs, because the details that matter are the feel of the leather, the weight of the hardware, the construction of a seam or the finishing of a case. Choose a seller whose specialists handle each piece in person. Every piece we list is physically inspected before it goes on the site, and nothing is approved from photographs alone.

Second, read the condition grade and the description. A good listing tells you plainly what wear the piece has, including the flaws. Vague words and heavily edited photographs are a reason to ask questions. On our listings the grade is stated, and flaws are photographed and described.

Third, ask what is included. The box, papers and accessories make a piece more complete, but they do not authenticate it. A listing should say exactly what comes with the piece, so there are no surprises when it arrives.

Fourth, understand the returns terms before you pay. Because authenticity and condition are verified and disclosed before sale, pre-owned pieces are not generally returnable for a change of mind. What you should expect is a clear commitment if the piece arrives materially different from its description or is found not to be authentic. Ours is 14 days from delivery, as set out in our terms.

Finally, watch for warning signs: a price far below what comparable pieces sell for, a seller who cannot give the reference or serial number, pressure to pay quickly outside the site, or a reluctance to let you speak to someone. If in doubt, ask. You can message an advisor before you buy, and we will tell you honestly what we know about a piece.

Questions

How can I tell if a pre-owned piece is authentic?

Choose a seller whose specialists inspect each piece in person, and ask for a Certificate of Authenticity that names what was checked. Photographs alone are not enough to authenticate a bag or a watch.

Can I return a pre-owned piece if I change my mind?

Pre-owned pieces are not generally returnable for a change of mind, because condition and authenticity are verified and disclosed before sale. If a piece arrives materially different from its description, or is found not to be authentic, we refund or replace it within 14 days of delivery.

What should I ask a seller before buying?

Ask for the condition grade and photographs of any flaws, the reference or model, what is included (box, papers, accessories), and how the piece was authenticated.
